[10/3/2026 - CELG Seminar] - Nuclear Fission and the Liquid Drop Model
06 tháng 03 năm 2026
The College of Economics, Law and Government would like to respectfully invite lecturers/ researchers to come and share your experiences at the CELG seminar:
Topic: Nuclear Fission and the Liquid Drop Model
Presenter: Prof. Phan Thanh Nam, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich
Time: 10:00 AM (Vietnam), Tuesday, March 10, 2026
Location: Room B1-204, 279 Nguyen Tri Phuong St, Dien Hong Ward, HCMC
Abstract:
The critical mass in nuclear fission is predicted by the liquid drop model. This talk is devoted to a mathematical treatment of the corresponding variational problem. In particular, I will discuss joint results with Rupert Frank and Rowan Killip on the existence and non-existence of minimizers.
About presenter:
Phan Thành Nam is a Professor of Mathematics at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich. His research lies in analysis and mathematical physics, with a focus on many-body quantum mechanics, functional analysis, spectral theory, the calculus of variations, and partial differential equations. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from Vietnam National University at Ho Chi Minh City in 2007, his Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Orléans, France, in 2008, and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Copenhagen in 2011.
He has held academic positions at the University of Cergy-Pontoise (France), IST Austria, and Masaryk University before joining LMU Munich in 2017. His work has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the European Mathematical Society Prize (2020), the Young Scientist Prize of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (2018), and a European Research Council Consolidator Grant (2022) worth 2 million euros.
He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Vietnam Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics. He also serves as an editor of the journals Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations, Mathematische Zeitschrift, and Mathematical Physics, Analysis and Geometry.
