[UEH 50 Global Partners] UEH and Sunway University (Malaysia) Renew Strategic Partnership: Co-Creating a Global Education Ecosystem for International Student Experiences

18 Jul, 2026

As part of the UEH 50 Years - 50 Partners in 5 Continents: Embracing Global Connection initiative, from 13 to 17 July 2026, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) delegation, led by Prof. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao, Vice President of UEH, visited Sunway University (Malaysia) to renew the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two institutions while launching a range of new collaborative initiatives in education, research, academic exchange, and the development of international experiential learning programs for students.

The mission reaffirmed UEH's internationalization strategy, which is driven by co-creation, global connectivity, and sustainable development, contributing to the realization of UEH's vision of becoming a multidisciplinary, innovation-driven university with regional impact.

Continuing the strategic partnership and opening a new phase of collaboration

The partnership between UEH and Sunway University since 2023 has achieved significant outcomes in academic exchange and the development of international programs. The renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding not only marks the continuation of this partnership but also opens a new phase of collaboration with broader and deeper areas of cooperation.

During the meeting, the leadership of both universities reviewed the achievements accomplished to date and agreed on key cooperation priorities for the 2026-2031 period, including:

  • - Student and faculty exchanges;
  • - Development of short-term academic programs and study tours;
  • - Co-organization of international conferences, seminars, and academic forums;
  • - Interdisciplinary research collaboration;
  • - Development of international academic programs and cultural exchange activities.

The UEH Flag Journey ceremony was held at Sunway University as a symbol of the shared journey of connecting knowledge, promoting educational values, and reaffirming the long-term commitment between the two universities within UEH's global strategic partner network.

From agreement to action: Co-creating meaningful collaborative outcomes

Moving beyond the traditional approach of merely signing cooperation agreements, UEH and Sunway University agreed to develop highly actionable initiatives that place students at the center while generating tangible value for both institutions.

One of the key initiatives jointly agreed upon is the Intercultural Video Project, an online cultural exchange program between students from UEH and Sunway University. Through cross-national student teams, participants will collaboratively produce multimedia content on culture, society, and sustainable development, thereby strengthening their intercultural communication skills, international teamwork capabilities, and global citizenship competencies.

In parallel, both universities also discussed plans to organize experiential learning programs, short-term exchanges, and annual academic exchange activities, enabling students to experience an international learning environment throughout their studies at UEH.

Enhancing international learning experiences: A key pillar of UEH's internationalization strategy

As part of the mission, the UEH delegation toured Sunway University's campus facilities, innovation centers, learning spaces, libraries, and international student support services.

The delegation also met with Sunway University's academic units to jointly design programs tailored to the needs of UEH students, ranging from short-term courses and summer programs to industry-integrated learning experiences and cultural exchange activities.

Notably, the mission coincided with the Study Tour program of UEH students at Sunway University, providing an opportunity for the leadership of both universities to engage directly with students regarding their needs, expectations, and future directions for expanding international programs.

A shared vision for a globally connected university

Speaking on the significance of the mission, Prof. Nguyen Khac Quoc Bao, Vice President of UEH, emphasized: "Internationalization should not be measured solely by the number of memoranda of understanding signed. More importantly, it lies in the ability to transform these commitments into substantive collaborative programs that create value for students, faculty, and the broader community. Sunway University is one of UEH's strategic partners in the ASEAN region, and we look forward to further advancing our partnership through the co-creation of impactful educational, research, and innovation initiatives across the region."

Representatives of Sunway University also highly appreciated UEH's transformation toward becoming a multidisciplinary university and expressed their desire to further expand collaborative programs between the two institutions in the coming years.

Expanding UEH's educational partnership network in Malaysia

In addition to its activities at Sunway University, the UEH delegation also visited the National University of Malaysia (UKM) to further expand its collaborative network within the ASEAN region.

Discussions focused on developing a multilateral cooperation ecosystem encompassing education, research, academic exchange, and international program development, aligned with UEH's strategic direction for its next stage of development.

Engaging with multiple partners during a single mission demonstrates UEH's proactive approach to building deeper international partnerships, creating greater opportunities for learning, research, and professional development for both students and faculty members.

Shaping the future together on UEH's 50-year journey

The mission to Malaysia further reaffirmed UEH's commitment to expanding its global strategic partner network, positioning international collaboration as a key driver for enhancing education, research, and innovation.

As UEH celebrates its 50th anniversary (1976-2026), every international engagement represents not only a milestone in partnership development but also a testament to the University's continuous journey toward building an open, multidisciplinary, innovation-driven, and globally connected university.

Through the "UEH 50 Years - 50 Partners in 5 Continents" initiative, UEH continues to connect with leading institutions around the world to share knowledge, co-create value, and expand global learning opportunities for its students, bringing to life the message: "Embracing The Future Together."
