Job Market Trends After Graduation in 2024

The labor market is constantly changing, and 2024 presents both challenges and opportunities for both job seekers and employers. Let's join DSA to explore and select good job opportunities in the new market trend!

Groups of industries with high demand for human resources in Vietnam

To identify emerging trends in the job market, in 2023, the Center of Forecasting Manpower Needs and Labor Market Information HCMC (FALMI) surveyed the recruitment needs of nearly 75,000 businesses with nearly 305,000 job openings.

With many emerging recruitment trends, what do we need to adapt well to it? If you can't fully answer that question yet, here are some tips you can take to boost your future career planning.

Essential skills in the digital age

According to Bernard Marr, author of the book "Future Skills: The 20 skills and competencies everyone needs to succeed in a digital world", he believes that the most sought-after skills will fall into one of two groups:

  • The first group helps organizations unlock the vast potential of pioneering technologies and tools.
  • The second group focuses on maximizing the value of human qualities and capabilities, which machines cannot match.

In other words, some skills will belong to the field of technology, while others are soft skills. But they often have one thing in common: they allow us to leverage specific skills in a world where machines are becoming increasingly complex.

Specifically, the required skill sets are:

  1. Data Skills: Data is the foundation of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. Understanding how to convert data into business value is becoming increasingly important.
  2. Cloud Computing Skills: The cloud computing market is expected to grow strongly in the coming years. This has led to an increasing demand for individuals with the technical skills to support businesses transitioning to the cloud.
  3. Machine Learning Engineering: The AI revolution requires a workforce with technical skills to implement applications. The World Economic Forum's "The Future of Jobs 2023" report also emphasizes that "AI and machine learning experts top the list of fast-growing occupations."
  4. Cybersecurity Skills: Data breaches, cyber attacks, and unauthorized intrusions are increasing in frequency and severity. Therefore, the skill of building cybersecurity systems and resilience will be one of the most sought-after skills in 2024.
  5. Communication Skills: Effective communication is a key factor in the business skill set. Today, there is a growing demand for people who can identify communication opportunities and bridge the communication gap between organizations.
  6. Project Management Skills: Whether managing people or machines, there is a growing demand for individuals with the skills to bring people, technology, and problem-solving skills together.
  7. Sustainability Skills: Businesses are increasingly aware of the importance of operating sustainably and minimizing their environmental impact. Therefore, skills in identifying and implementing green solutions are highly valued.
  8. Interpersonal Networking Skills: The ability to build relationships with the right people is essential for a career. Building a network based on trust and common goals will bring long-term benefits.
  9. Generative AI Skills: Generative AI like ChatGPT is making big changes. However, the skills and abilities to identify opportunities, develop effective solutions, manage change, and address ethical issues will remain valuable and sought-after skills throughout 2024.

In addition to the above skills, here are some things you can do right now to increase your job application potential:

Connect from university

Building a network provides an opportunity to gain insights from different perspectives and experiences, helping us to enhance both our learning and personal development, and this has been made easy through different platforms. From internships to research projects, relationships can open doors that we never thought possible. Therefore, building a network early in your academic career will lay a solid foundation for future job search and career development.

Be interested in the business

Instead of trying to make yourself the most interesting person, the one who looks really "experienced", show the interviewer how interested you are in the opportunity. You should provide examples of how you have tackled past challenges and successes to demonstrate how you can contribute to the organization. Don't forget to use the STAR method to communicate your experience and achievements in a concise and engaging way.

Go the extra mile

Going the extra mile can make all the difference when applying for an internship. If there is an event, webinar, or skill-building opportunity related to the internship, attend it. Employers notice when you put in the effort and will remember the candidates who show up to their events multiple times. Additionally, these small actions set you apart from other candidates and show that you are genuinely invested in the position.
