Doctoral Training Program Tied to International Research Projects at UEH: From Doctoral Candidate to Global Scholar

15 Jun, 2026

In the context where postgraduate education is increasingly intertwined with team-based research, academic projects, and international cooperation networks, the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City (UEH) is implementing a Doctoral Training Program tied to international research projects – the International Project-based PhD – as a new approach in doctoral education. This model places substantive research, international publication, and academic career development at its core, creating conditions for doctoral candidates to directly participate in research groups, International Research Labs (IRL), and UEH's international scholar network.

As one of the components under the UEH 2026 International Academic Ecosystem, the International Project-based PhD is closely connected with the UEH100 International Scholar Program, IRL, and the Postdoctoral Programs. This connection provides a foundation for doctoral candidates to engage in long-term research orientations, working alongside UEH faculty, international scholars, and postdocs in an internationally standardized academic environment.

Doctoral training tied to the International Research Ecosystem

Different from the traditional doctoral training model, the International Project-based PhD at UEH creates conditions for doctoral candidates to participate from the outset in International Research Labs and ongoing academic projects. With the accompaniment of a team of professors, scientists, and global academic partners, doctoral candidates not only develop their dissertations from research issues of academic and practical value but also gradually build independent research capacity, expand their international academic network, update advanced research methods, and accumulate scientific publication experience throughout the training process.

From research to publication and academic career development

Direct participation in research projects and the international academic ecosystem not only helps doctoral candidates develop their research capacity but also creates a foundation for future academic achievements. Under the guidance of the research group, research ideas and results are gradually developed into scientific articles in reputable journals within the SSCI, SCIE, ABDC systems, along with various other academic products. Concurrently, this process also contributes to building a professional scientific profile, expanding career development opportunities in the fields of teaching, research, policy consulting, and international academic collaboration after graduation.

Support mechanisms for doctoral candidates to focus on academics

The program is designed to create conditions for doctoral candidates to concentrate on long-term research activities. Accordingly, doctoral candidates participating in International Research Groups receive a full tuition fee waiver for the 4-year training period and receive research expense support from the group's resources as per regulations.

For full-time doctoral candidates, UEH implements support policies regarding monthly income, insurance, accommodation, and related welfare benefits according to current regulations. Additionally, each International Research Group is allocated a budget of up to 1.5 billion VND over 4 years to carry out research activities and develop academic products.

These mechanisms help doctoral candidates have better conditions to access data, scholars, and academic activities from the early stages; thereby focusing on dissertation development, scientific publications, and building a research profile according to international standards.

Opportunities for candidates in the 2nd intake of Doctoral Admissions 2026

UEH is currently conducting the 2nd intake of doctoral admissions for 2026 at UEH Ho Chi Minh City and UEH Mekong, including the full-time doctoral candidate program and the program for doctoral candidates participating in international research groups.

Candidates with a serious research orientation who wish to develop their dissertation in an environment tied to research projects, research groups, and international scholar networks can find detailed admission information here.

Building the future from knowledge and innovation

In the context where Vietnam is promoting the development of science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation according to national strategic orientations, training a team of doctoral scholars and developing research capacity is not only a core task of higher education institutions but also an important foundation for creating new knowledge, promoting technology application and transfer, enhancing national competitiveness, and contributing to the country's sustainable development.

With the International Project-based PhD, UEH aims to build an open academic environment, connected to the international scientific community, and nurturing ideas capable of creating value for society. This is not just a doctoral training program, but also a part of UEH's development strategy to become a multidisciplinary research university, contributing to promoting innovation and building the future from knowledge.
