Use your English to make yourself unique

Use your English to make yourself unique

English is now more than just a foreign language or a subject used to gauge our proficiency; it is a tool that can help us advance globally. However, with conventional teaching and learning methods, we are more easily constrained by linguistic constraints like rigid grammar and poor pronunciation. The question then becomes, "How can we use English to make yourself unique?"

In today's society, it is common to find students with high language test scores, diplomas, and medals who are proficient in English but who struggle to communicate in their native tongue when speaking to customers and coworkers who are from other countries or when simply conversing with native speakers daily. Lack of language and communication skills is what is to blame for this issue. It can be compared to linguistic knowledge like bricks and mortar, but it's easier to become a house if just those things can't be built and arranged. In response to this issue, Department of Student Affairs and the School of Foreign Languages held a Language Workshop on "Use your English to make yourself unique" on May 19, 2023, with the participation of Mr. Andy Tri Nguyen, founder and course director at TESOL International Academy.

Ms. Andy Tri Nguyen's arrival at UEH English Zone has provided the students with beneficial and valuable knowledge on how to use English and the necessary communication skills to impress and make connections in conversation. Communicators need to be aware of seven crucial steps to accomplish that. The first point to make is the rhythmic synchronization of the mind and body, or, to put it simply, the synchronization of thoughts and deeds. For the second step, learners must comprehend the terminology to prevent misunderstandings and decrease transmission effectiveness. Listening to others is another critical skill that communicators must develop for themselves. In addition to hearing what the other person is saying, listening also involves analyzing data and comprehending the content.

Furthermore, the communicator must comprehend the other person's needs to communicate with them effectively. What information delivery methods do they prefer?, ... to select the transmission method that best suits the intended audience. In particular, when communicating with communicators from other cultures, the speaker emphasizes the importance of considering socio-cultural factors. Understanding yourself, your strengths, weaknesses, and actions is equally crucial to understanding the other person.

Mr. Andy finally presented the best SMART model for planning communications. To better understand this tool, the students engaged in spirited discussions and practiced applying the model through brief exercises provided during the debate.

The community at UEH was enthusiastic about the seminar's success and its positive impact on English learning and proficiency. In just two hours, the workshop was held in a comfortable setting that was infused with a desire to learn and the active participation of the attendees. With May's theme, "Use your English to make yourself unique," the workshop clarified how to communicate in English in academic and practical contexts. The seminar also addressed attendees' queries and worries about using English to develop personal brands.
